Handwriting is a Determinant Factor
in the Writing Assessment Test
Studies have suggested that the results of standardized tests which are
scored by trained raters are significantly skewed by messy handwriting.
(Sloan & McGinnis, 1978; Sweedler-Brown, 1992).
Will poor handwriting hurt my score?
Only if the writing is illegible. Illegible papers cannot be scored.
However, handwriting that is difficult to read can make it hard to
recognize what you've done well, so write as neatly as you can.

Does handwriting count?
Handwriting is not directly scored....
At the
same time,
there is
no question that neatness
makes papers
easier to read, and
raters cannot afford to spend a great
deal of
time trying to
decipher
any one paper. It is therefore in the
students' best
interest to
make their work as neat and readable
as
possible,
so that nothing will be misread or misunderstood
.
